014 Newsletter December 2021

Last Newsletter to SHA members in Wales for 2021:  No. 14

  • The campaign against the Health Bill legislation continues. When the timetable for the next reading in Parliament is known, we will let you know any plans and how you can get involved. You could still, regardless of the political colour of your MP, write to your MP to vote against (not abstain) the Bill. You may want to point out that a vote for this Bill will be damaging to their political career and will be highlighted in any future election campaign.
  • Dates for your diary
  • SHA UK Central Council Meeting on Saturday 15 January 2022. No time has been circulated but it is likely to be in the morning. More information to follow. All members can attend but only Central Council delegates can vote.

The fourth session will include selections from films of Julian, Introduced by Gareth Jones, and Jonathan Richards.
  • Wales Labour Party Conference March 11-13, 2022, in Llandudno. Alison Scouller is SHA Cymru delegate and SHA Cymru are submitting the following motion again (it was submitted for cancelled November conference).

‘Conference believes and affirms that:

1) in accordance with the Welsh Labour Government’s  reforming of the union 20-point plan it is necessary for the structure of the Labour Party to reflect the same level of devolution as we demand for the structure of UK Governance.

2) a first step in this direction is to support the full devolution of the rules governing, and applicable to, the Welsh Labour Party.

Therefore, conference resolves that the Welsh Labour leadership and Welsh Executive Committee will engage with the UK Labour Party and the NEC to achieve this objective.’

  • Labour party members will be aware of a consultation paper about electoral reform. After much discussion, SHAC officers decided not to respond at this time but to consult with other socialist organisations.
  • Prior to SHA UK AGM 2022 members will be asked if they wish to self-nominate to stand for Central Council. If any members consider self-nominating and would like the support of SHAC please get in touch. Tony Beddow and Brian Gibbons were successfully appointed in 2021.
  • SHAC sent a welcome and congratulations to Sue Tranka, new Chief Nursing Officer for Wales.
